Very cleanly written and developed. Well done. I haven't had time to play through with it yet but I have read through it, printed, and bound it to a notebook. Good work

This is a fun little hack and slash game. It is very rules lite which means the emphasis is on quick, fun combats. It is not a game for the epic saga (at least I don't think it is). Its for an evening of kicking back with laughs and not having to worry about needed 4 different books to run a session. I also think it's a great system to introduce people new RPGs because its very simple menchanics and you the GM are free to create a plethora of NPCs to entertain and draw them in.

After a significant investment into 3/3.5/4e, I've decided to run with Old School Hack instead. Simple, intuitive, with choices for each character class without getting bogged down. Allows you to get out there and roll to hit and quickly get through combats in record time. With Fictive's additional templates, this is a very fleshed out game through level 4. If you like playing, and not rules reading, this is the game for you.

Old School Hack. Great free product from Kirin Robinson.

The product has a very simple game mechanics with a very inventive and excellent party flavored experience system. Based on old D&D, you can hack your way through Goblins and Orcs. Easy to learn and play. although I wished there was a sample monster somewhere in there. But for a free product, It`s a great fun.

Old School Hack is an amazingly simplified roleplaying game that has all the feel and flavor a guy could want, with none of the periphery stuff.

Probably my favorite RPG in the last year.

My favorite part of the game is the way experience works. Fun play gets you Awesome Points, and you only get the xp when you use the awesome in some way. And then you level up only when everyone does.

Old School Hack (OSH) is everything I want from a dungeon fantasy RPG with one exception... This is a basic set, meaning it only covers levels one through five. That said, it is very easy to improvise the later levels.

Similar to what the other reviewer said, I am not fan of Race-As-Class... However, after 1st level you can select Talents from the other classes. Thus, that complaint really holds no water in my opinion.

OSH's rules are simple, promote excitement and laugh worthy moments and are designed to get you to the good stuff as soon as possible. They are imminently hackable making the game's longevity seem eternral.

Visually this pdf is professional quality that more than rivals releases from companies that actually have a staff dedicated to layout and art. It is easy to read and understand.

I can't recommend Old School Hack enough. This isn't a retroclone but a great expansion on one version of old school roleplaying.

This is one great product, albeit a "beta" version. The authors/designers obviously know what attracts the OSR player to this type of game. The pdf is a quick, enjoyable read; and to those of us with less time to game than we'd like, this is appreciated. I mention the designer(s) above purposefully. While the writing is simultaneously reverential and snappy, what really stands out in the pdf version is the design. Understated, printer-friendly, but very engaging. This document is lifted up by the layout, typography, and icons which help explain the flow of the game. Very well done.

If I have anything negative to say, it's based solely on personal preference: I'm not a fan of races as classes. In this game (similar to Basic D&D), humans can choose different classes/professions, but the demi-human races cannot. A human can be a fighter but an elf is just an elf, for example. (Bonus points for making goblins a playable race, though. That is a fun addition.)

Overall, awesome work. Can't wait to see the final version of this game.
