Dead of Night: Coyote Creek

Hard to find people who play this game and not many scenarios for the game. Very happy to have found this so that I can play it with my group when we try some new systems.

The rules are very straightforward. This is a well written set of instructions that will allow you to jump into your favorite hooror trope and roleplay the hell out of it. This sort of game would be ideal for convention play, or a one shot.

Are you looking for something to make your halloween game memorable? get this. Do you want something with simple yet elegant mechanics that can be run at a moments notice? This would be it.

This game would be useless to you if you have never seen a horror movie. It would be a quaint set of rules if you have a passing knowledge of the horror genre. This will be the vehicle that sets you free if you are well steeped in the tropes of the horror genre.

If you want to run it asap with a minor knowledge of horror movie, buy it, then watch... Cabin in the Woods, Scream, Evil Dead, Scary Movie, Drop Dead Fred, and Dead Alive.

then you will be a master of horror and the envy of your friends.

Amazing little book, found out about it while listening to the "Good friends of Jackson Elias" podcast. Even if you dont want to play the game itself the advice on scenario improvisation is invaluable in itself. The concept of tension points for structuring scenario pacing is wonderful

Love it and would recommend to anyone interested in horror gaming

Dead of Night

Dead of Night is a lot of fun and easy to learn. It's a rules lite system, with enough punch for detail lovers and the rules are well written and easy to read. The system is genreless and horror games from any era can be played. Whatever kind of movie or story or style of horror is represented.

Simple, easy, and versatile; and perfectly suited to gamers who like horror but don't have a lot of time to prep or play. Highly recommended and on a technical side, the pdf is clear and the scan color is vibrant. And lots of free downloads on Steampower's website. Great game!

This is a really nice, simple RPG system with some discussions on making a horror game and plot hooks for several games. The system has a simple solution to initiative as players can't roll if they just rolled. Drama Points act as both your health and methods of adding plot, switching stats or other bonuses. This means that you get more by doing things like investigating noises alone or dropping a weapon after hitting the monster. I've run it a couple of times and played it a bit more than that. It's good fun, easily hackable and relatively prepless

Lost Days of Memories and Madness
by Lars L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/11/2017 07:07:33

I really like the way how this GM-less one-shot RPG is structured - a mix of bidding tokens and dice rolling. Decadent elves fighting for memories until the last one goes insane and the kingdom falls. Players who like Fiasco or Microscope might like this game, too.

Dead of Night
by Alexie R. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/01/2010 20:26:48

Dead of night is good at what it does and what it does is one-shot beer and pretzels games emulating B-grade horror movies. With hardly any preparation, one could have the game in full swing in less than five minutes. A refreshing change from all those RPG's where you spend the first hour just on chargen. The essential mechanics boil down to just one rule: if you fail a risky die rol,l you loose a survival point – the games equivalent of hit points, sanity points and drama points all rolled into one. Everything else is just window dressing. There are no pointless modifier tables and endless equipment lists. This is strictly crunch-less RPG. In fact it is fair to say that mechanics are almost an afterthought. One could use entirely different rule set as long as it uses something like survival points. Wishu immediately comes to mind here as does Fudge/Fate variants. That is not to say that the Dead of Night doesn't have lots of fiddly rules, it does. But they could safely be ignored, especially the chargen rules. Who need game balance when your “victim” - the games' name for player characters, has life expectancy of a teenage coed in a slasher flick?

Where this game really shines is in showing you how to emulate all the different horror movie genres, from cheesy slashers on to slapstick black comedy. It gives you a monster creation toolkit that could and does create any imaginable variation of vampire, werewolf, hungry ghost, alien terror or unstoppable killer that has ever graced the silver screen. It gives you handy tips on how to craft a story on the fly, even if you never done it before and shows you examples with ready made scenarios.

All in all I highly recommend Dead of Night to everyone. The value for money is hard to match. I wish more PDF products were up to this standard. Grade A from me.

Dead of Night

This is a fun rules-light horror game for a group of players who are looking for a quick game when someone doesn't show up for the night or to introduce newcomers to roleplaying. You can make characters in 5 minutes if you want and the options are very intuitive. The GM can make monsters very easily and scales the challenge based on how many players you have. There is a ton of flexibility to make a Friday the 13th style slasher, a zombie horde, or pretty much any crazy monster you want. The statistics are the same for the monsters as they are player, making it very simple for everyone. That doesn't mean the game isn't interesting though. I have yet to run it, but it seems like it will run very smoothly, keep things moving quickly, and make sure everyone has a ton of fun and scares without getting bogged down in mechanics. This is a really good buy for people wanting a rules-light system that is fast paced and focused on the storytelling over tactics and "crunch".

The book is written really well, the artwork is crazy awesome, and I can't wait to run this game for a group.

Let me begin by saying this product is well worth the buy.

Upon first opening this PDF, I was impressed by the detail of the cover page. The text and the image really set the reader up for what is to come in the rest of the book. The pages are well laid out and easy to read. The way the text is spaced actually makes the 180+ pages go by really fast. I also really enjoyed the horror movie posters inserted throughout the book. It really added a lot to the presentation, especially since this game is designed to run like your own horror movie.

The game rules are also very simple and easy to understand. Notwithstanding their simplicity, there is actually quite a lot of flex and possibilities in them. I haven't actually had a chance to run the game (but will soon!) but I'm very impressed with the rules and how they add to the feel of a horror movie. This book got me very excited to sit down and play the game with my friends!

The Gates of Troy
by Chris G. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 04/29/2007 00:00:00

The RPG Industry is filled with books that are in a sense reinventing the wheel. That is they take a subject that has been done a dozen times and attempt to put a fresh angel or new idea to it. Many times it turns out to be just another book on an overdone topic. Rarely does one see an RPG book that covers something original. And as Gates of Troy shows it is easy to find something original by looking toward the myths and history of the many peoples of Earth.

Gates of Troy is not a book of historical fact. The author states this almost immediately, but Troy is a subject of myth and legend that is quite famous even in the modern age. Of course with the movie Troy having been released not to long ago that should help in getting the story back into the general knowledge pool of the people.

Gates of Troy is a PDF released by Steam Power Publishing and written by Andrew Kenrick. The pdf comes in a zip file a little less then two megs and the PDF itself is a bit over two megs. It only has forty five pages and It reads as if it could have been longer. The PDF is in color, although most of the colors are browns and tans. There is a pale yellow border with Greek writing on it. It covers one side of the page and with no border on the other side makes it appear there is a lot of white space in the book. The layout is easy to read but the border is a bit distracting. The art is plentiful and looks mostly like clipart of Greek gods and pictures. The PDF is well bookmarked.

The supplement centers on the city of Troy and using it for a fantasy campaign. It is set in the Bronze Age and has some advice on how to simulate that. It would have been beneficial to the reader there was more discussion on what advancements the Bronze Age had and what it did not. It is obvious that some research was done for this book, I would have liked to seen more of that research though make it into the book. A bibliography would have been appreciated as well.

While the topic of Troy does a good job of separating it from the other multitudes of d20 books, I just was left with the need for more. The book I feel does not give enough details to properly run a campaign using the City of Troy. The city is well described and most of the book is devoted to it. Most of the major players in Troy are explained and stated out.

Gates of Troy does a nice job to introduce people to the city of Troy and provide a nice basic framework to run a campaign using the city and its events. I feel that a more detailed approach would have been very beneficial.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
