100 Random Mercenary Companies

ADD TO WISHLIST >

In a fantasy setting, many nations may lack sufficient forces to find an extended conflict, requiring them to hire mercenaries, or their forces may lack the specialised skills, often magical, that some companies have. At some point characters may well encounter mercenary companies in the game, whether on the battlefield or off. They could be friends, foes or even someone to join.

This has a list of 100 different companies, each with its name and a brief overview and other details.

Here is a sample company:

Stackbeard’s Sappers: Founded by the infamous Corallon Stackbeard, these mercenary engineers have built engines of destruction for a dozen different kingdoms. It’s said there’s no wall this dwarven company cannot go through, or under, quickly turning a siege into a brief, bloody victory.

I liked it. Short enough to be readable, varied enough to be interesting. Stackbeard's Sapper's above is representative of the amount of detail in each entry: an interesting name, a few words about their unique shtick (quick-tempered desert warriors, or river-running transport experts), and sometimes a few tactical notes (favors surprise attacks under cover of darkness).

The way I plan to use this product is to keep it on my shelf and pull it out when I need a spur to my creativity for a quick origin for some initially-unimportant NPCs, like the guards on a city wall: "you squint at the walls and don't see anyone manning them at first, but then you see the tops of some plumed helmets, and as you approach the gates you see the banner of the Fearless Fraternity, a medium-sized mercenary band of pint-sized halfling warriors, noted for their extreme, sometimes suicidal bravery." In addition, browsing the tables in this product gives me ideas for new lands and kingdoms I might want to add to...See more

The default is actually $1.99. The recent change to the DriveThru page layout I find makes it difficult to tell what the crossed out price is.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
