Baby Bestiary 5e Beast Companion

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Build, Raise & Rear

You've discovered the adorable and now it's time to bring those adorable creatures on your 5e adventures. This supplement will help you create critters to join you on your adventures and are also designed to level up with you as you go!

This book does not contain raw stats for every baby beastie imaginable, that would be far too much work. Instead what we did is created a system that allows you to easily build and improve a beast companion.

In addition, for those who want more beasts in their class design, we've also thrown in 3-beast driven sub-classes;

Druid - Circle of Summons
Fighter - Houndmaster
Wizard - Familiar Spellmaster

These are based on the award-winning books (but not required to use the companion)

Baby Bestiary Volume 1                                       Baby Bestiary Volume 2

Baby Bestiary Volume 1  Baby Bestiary Volume 2

Are there adorable beasts? Totally.

But, it's much more than that! This isn't just a book for kids. It's a wonderful backdrop for campaigns, too! While there aren't stat blocks, you learn to care, raise, and treat these beasts which can be later used in the campaign. There are critters you least expect in there, too, so it's filled with surprises. Not to mention, the artwork is absolutely gorgeous.

Quick question. What origin from the rulebook would the Cerberus be a part of? Mythic odyssey of Thero's, the book with the Cerberus monster template, says they are a monstrosity. However the monstrosity doesn't start them with 2 wild features to put into extra heads. Do we just add that anyways or use a different origin?

Rather worried about the point of borrowing of they don't have anyway to see where they're going... There's no option for tremorsense so I've just added that you can gain it in place of keen senses.

I finally bought this with the caretaker warlock and the baby bestiary and I'm so in love with them all.
Now, have you thought on making some sort of "character sheet" for the companions?

So first off: I love these rules, and my party and I can't wait to use them! I did run into some confusion, and any clarification would be welcome.

One of my players and I are creating a companion of level 2, but we got tripped up on the wording with regards to the wild features it would get. She's going for the beast origin, which has the "Bonus Wild Feature: your animal companion starts with any two Low Tier Wild Features". I read that as picking an additional feature to the one you get at level 1, with level 2 giving you an additional feature: thus resulting in 3 features at level 2. She however reads it as starting with one feature, gaining another two from the Bonus Wild Feature, and then a fourth at level 2.

What would be the proper number? 3 or 4?

Hi Sasha! I'm glad you love it!
I had to revisit it myself to be sure.
It looks like the companion origins are offering 2 features, with the beast allowing you to pick which two. So this case a lv 2 companion, that is a Beast origin would have 4 features.

My friend wants a Medusa companion. How would I go about building one at level one? As I don't see many petrification abilities.

I want to run this in my game but am unsure of how to balance encounters. When using CP ratings, does a companion count as 1 PC? Or is it like, half a PC? I have 2 players and want to give each a companion. Do they count as a party of 4? Thanks for any help in advance!

beast companions are 'intended' to be combatants..but they totally can be. If the level is the same as the players, I'd suspect that they'd count as half a player, but this could also depend on how they play.
I would try an encounter and see how it plays out from there, then adjust as necessary.

I noticed that animal companions look a lot like characters. Would playing one as a PC work?

Hey Daniel!
Sorry I didn't respond earlier..I swear I had written a response (looks like I didn't).
You could totally play as a companion! You would be a little lower power..but with the scaling that we have in place you should do just fine with it.

Does the Familiar Spellmaster still pay the GP cost for find familiar? it's still an action to dismiss to a pocket? is it an Action or Bonus Action to pull out of the pocket?

It's not 10 g.p. It's 10 g.p. worth of charcoal. If your DM goes for it take a background with an alchemy lab proficiency. You can produce that much charcoal during a long rest.

Hi Dixie,
I apologize for the delay, I'm in process of moving.
No, you don't need the handbooks to use this companion.

I love the Bestiary. However I did notice that the Wizard Archetype is still missing the damage value in the Explosive Dismissal feature. What might that damage value be?

Yeah the transfer of text got cut off.
Its going in the update going live very soon.

The text is
"The target takes force damage equal to half your wizard level on a failed save."

I have a problem with one of the pictures in my copy: on page 9, the picture of the sphinx is layered over the text to the left of it. Do you know of a fix for that?

Let me take a look, it was probably a layout mistake on my behalf and I apologize.
I should be pushing an update this weekend with a few other fixes.
Thanks for the feedback!

There's also some typing errors throughout the entire document, such as unfinished words in the middle of sentences. It easy to tell the person/people writing it got to a point where they have read it so often that it started to look right. You might want to get someone else to proofread the whole thing again. ;)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
