FOSSIL B/X Character Generation

ADD TO WISHLIST >

FOSSIL (Fantasy Old School System Index Lite) is a bare bones OSR system that is roughly compatible with B/X rules and retroclones. This first booklet covers character generation and advancement.

The booklet is just 12 small pages (landscape DL 210x105mm) yet includes everything needed to generate and equip a B/X character. It also includes advancement rules to tenth level, combat and damage tables, full descriptions for first level cleric and magic-user spells, and a blank character sheet.

There are two versions of the PDF. The first one gives clerics a spell at first level. Whereas the second one gives clerics their first spell at second level and follows strict B/X spell progression for clerics thereafter. Otherwise they are identical.

Professionally printed copies of this booklet will be available from Squarehex.co.uk in April 2018. I hope to include a sticker with each printed copy that will allow the alternate cleric spell advancement to added as an option.

Work on the second booklet with Game Mastering rules is underway. Following that there will be a Spells booklet and possibly a Monsters booklet. In addition there is also my B/X Monster Reference Index which is already available in print and PDF.

The link isn't showing an image for me. There should be 3 PDFs 2 versions of the booklet and another one with the character sheets 3up on a single page.

Although I'll doing some more proofing of the PDF before it goes to print, please feel free to let me know if you spot a typo or mistake.

You want your customers to edit the product for you, AFTER they pay for it? Professional publishing doesn't work that way. Edit it yourself, then bring it back for sale.

Wow, a bit snarky aren't you? Even the most thoroughly professionally edited document contains errors. The publisher is simply asking people to point out any errors you spot.

I'm firmly in the hobby publishing camp rather than the professional. All revenue from the PDF will be put towards the print run. I know I've got some customers that would be happy to help put something right if I've got a digit wrong in table or something similar. I certainly don't expect anyone to sit and edit anything.

A publisher who corrects the missed issues/errors is worth a gold piece for sure. I'll update withthing I note.

You certainly can expect me to read both booklets and look for any issues I can spot. I'll have it done by tomorrow. :)

After the incredible B/X monster reference, I've waited a long time to see FOSSIL come to life. The fact that I can contribute anything to make it better means a lot to me.

OK, I have about 30 corrections. Went through FOSSILchtrgen.pdf, but both booklets seem almost identical. Tomorrow I'll double check the numbers, and the last page (MU spells). LL = "Labyrinth Lord", B/X = "B/X Essentials: Classes and Equipment". Page number in square brackets.

- [1] There is no space between "copyright" and the "(c)".
- [1] "total hit dice of value turned" sounds strange, LL uses "total hit dice of undead creatures turned", B/X uses "the number of Hit Dice of undead affected". Assuming that you are aiming for a single word object of the action, I would suggest "total hit dice of undead turned" or "total hit dice of creatures turned". "Turning value" looks a bit weird to me.
- [2] "or longbows" could be together, without the line break in between.
- [2] LL uses "orc" referring to the language. B/X uses "orcish", and that's what's in the...See more

Thank you for all those. Both PDFs are identical apart from the cleric spell table. I'll go with LL rules where possible. You're right about the Prime Requisites table I made some corrections on my copy earlier today. I'm happy to change Armour Class to AC (I think it only occurs in two places). A fair bit of text got cut from the first draft Magic-User spell descriptions to make them fit on one page without reducing the font size, but I'll try and fix them where space allows.

After some sleep, I have the rest:

- [10] "etc.." - never double up periods. When it ends a sentence, the period after the abbreviation is sufficient.
- [10] "Allows the reading magical inscriptions" - likely missing "of".
- [10] "he is able to read that writing without magic." Technically, the inscription is magic in itself, so "without him using magic." or "without the use of this spell." (as in LL) is better.

- [9],[10] Both spell pages would look much better if all the "Range: " words were vertically aligned.

- [12] The OGL page font looks a bit weird, as if the "I" and "l" characters were not embedded, and came from a different font. I've posted a sample of what it looks like on https://imgur.com/a/lUfz4.

Went through the numbers on a couple of pages, they look the same as in LL. But I have to admit, I did not double-check all of them. The ones most important...See more

I've updated the PDFs with nearly all the corrections. I couldn't do anything with the single characters at the end of some lines with my current software in way that improved the look/fit of the text. Thank you again for your help with this. If you send me an email (oubliettemagazine@yahoo.co.uk) I'll make sure you get a copy in print as soon as I get them.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
