Easy Settlements

Use this system to create cities on the fly. It's designed for use with the Cepheus Engine rules, but it's useful for any game. While the core Cepheus Engine rules give you the ability to create whole planets at once, this book makes it easy to generate portions of the planet. You can use it for medieval-style or futuristic cities for added flexibility.

When a settlement calls for multiple terrain types, are those assumed to be in the same hex or in surrounding hexes?

Geez. Sorry. I'm just now getting this message. I'd put those terrain types in surrounding hexes.

I was asking around on the Traveller and Cepheus Discord servers for something that was exactly this in all respects. Thank you for writing it!

I was able to open my copy, and having run through the generation a couple of times as a test...
I have some observations / comments...
[This is going to end up sounding negative, but I want it to be constructive - I think their is a core of something very good here - I just think it needs a bit of polish, though some of it, maybe is only apparent as I haven't got the Cepheus Engine rules...)

The system starts by setting aside an 80*80 km grid...
But then gives no indication of what to fill the map with - just jumps right into individual settlement
[So maybe drop the whole hex map reference for this document - or bring over the notes that might apply from the Cepheus Engine]

Size - even the biggest settlement fits within one hex. [see water table note…]
What does the [A] indicate - other letters are found in other tables also…

The Terrain Types table - has no reference to negative values
[If they are to be treated as zero a note...See more

I can comment on a few things for you. Note that most of the oddities are due to the Cepheus Engine, which this is based on—which in turn is the OGL version of Mongoose Publishing's first edition Traveller RPG.

The [A] is hexadecimal notation, used in the USP (mentioned briefly in the Settlement Creation Process second paragraph). When you only have one digit to represent a number 10 or higher, you use letters. A=10, B=11…G=16.

Knowledge level is based on tech level in Traveller, which is 1d6 + modifiers. So KL is also 1d6 + modifiers. And since TL/KL is never a negative number, 1d6 makes more sense since it has a higher chance of getting positive numbers. Keep in mind that 2d6-7 has a roughly 42% chance of rolling a 1+.

Hey, thanks for replying Christopher. I didn't get the message about the comments. Also, thanks Malcolm. I assumed no terrain to start, and that you fill in around the cities as directed. I also put in a section (I thought) where I suggest that you can just plunk down cities where you like. I'm revising the doc to have the population number be individuals, instead of houses. Keeps things from getting ridiculously dense. I do think that your comments are constructive. Thanks again.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
