Crimson Dragon Slayer 1.11

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This little PDF is a re-boot of the Crimson Dragon Slayer RPG.  It takes two steps back and one in a slightly new direction.  Less comedic, gonzo, 80's references and more dark, weird science-fantasy.

The rules were written as ultra-light as possible, taking more of an Alpha Blue RPG approach.  I wanted something that could be demonstrated in one hour, a taste of paper & pencil roleplaying for those who've never played or those who haven't played in years.

Included is a brief scenario called "The Curse of Xakaar Abbey."

This booklet comes in two flavors - rich and creamy and plain Jane (b/w printer friendly).  You'll get both.  Best of all, it's FREE!

I hope you enjoy it.  And please do... show your friends, play at home, play online, play in public, take it to your friendly local game store, run it at a convention, etc.  This is my gift to the hobby that is desperately seeking new gamers, new blood.

Your feedback will go a long way towards creating a full-blown 2nd edition in 2018.  Thanks in advance!

In the meantime, you can continue adventuring with the first stand-alone scenario for CDS 1.11.  It's called Slaves of Tsathoggua

The latest D20 "speed version" geared for online virtual-tabletop games is out. It's called Crimson Dragon Slayer D20. It loses the VSd6 system, but makes it more compatible with traditional OSR and D&D mechanics. And it's a FREE PDF. FYI, I also included CDS D20 in Cha'alt.

Someone had a question on the cleric's abilities. Here's my response: http://draconicmagazine.com/articles/crimson-dragon-slayer-cleric-question

Oh! I like these trimmed down rules *so* much better! I'd kind of like to see some of the old races back though. Any suggestions on how to handle robots/reptiles/fairies/crystallins etc. under the new rules? I'm definitely okay losing some of the goofier aspects of the game, but some of the races were what made it stand out as a more sci-fantasy game and I think they could still be handled seriously.

Really, that's my only complaint. With more race options I'd rank this a 5 instead of a 4.

Good question, Marshall. I think if you used a case-by-case basis of 1d6/2d6/3d6, depending on strong suit and maybe one special ability or power per race should do the trick. Mix and match!

When I did my little fix a couple weeks ago, I made a mistake. Yesterday's update fixed that and also announced three new scenarios coming at the end of this year!

The scenarios published after CDS 1.11 came out were made for this edition. But everything is more or less compatible between the two editions.

I just updated the PDF files today. There was only one substantive change - wizards lose a point of Health for each d6 in their spellcasting dice pool. Why? Because unlimited casting ability without some cost just isn't realistic, and it's a little broken game-wise, as well.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
