Magic has always been real, you just had to know where to find it.

Those proficient in these elusive arts soon became feared and revered by “the Silent,” those who could not wield Ætheric Power. To save themselves from the Silent and each other, the Arcanum was founded; Four Leagues who each protect and harness one of the four elemental Æthers of magical power. They entered into a covenant called the Sub Rosa: Four Oaths to protect the Silent, the Eldritch, and even the very Æthers they wield. It was a time of peace.

But then, just over a hundred years ago, the light of magic sputtered and died.  The noble forces of the Arcanum were beset on all sides by the renegade forces of the Oathbreakers and an unholy alliance of monsters, the undead, and Those Beyond. In an all or nothing bid to save the world from a cataclysmic fate, the Arcanum’s most respected Magisters managed to temporarily shut the Thresholds from which the magical Æthers came, and went into hibernation, vowing to return and bring the light of magic back to the Earth when the threat was abated.

Now the Thresholds are re-opening; and spilling magic, monsters, and mayhem back into a world full of young, brash Guttersnipes with no understanding of how to wield the mystical forces from beyond.  The Century of Silence has passed, and magic is surging back through the Thresholds. The Magisters of the Arcanum are awakening from their protective Soulvault only to find a world foreign to them. They are joined by the Guttersnipes, powerful amateurs only recently empowered by the return of magic.

These are the new soldiers in the final battle against the ancient threats from the Outer Spheres. As a stalwart member of the Arcanum, you have a duty to uphold the four Oaths, and to defend the Silent against all of the evils from here to beyond the Thresholds!

I really like this game, I'd give the game 5/5. I want to be really clear about that, if you don't mind dropping about 45$ on the cards than you will have a lot of fun with this game. That being said this book is really badly written, I'd give it a 2/5 at best. Specifically I'm referring to the clarity of the rules and quality of the editing/grammar. I read this book more or less cover to cover and it felt like there was some kind of editing or grammar error at least once a page, the most egregious one being on p.42 where the editor has apparently left in a reminder note for the writer which reads "Need Guttersnipe paragraph." The other main problem is that the rules are extremely unclear. Lets take casting spells for example, this is a game about being a magician so you would think the mechanics for casting a spell would be something they put a lot of work into getting right. Try reading the "How to Use Spells" section on p.101 and see if you are confused or not. This page is vague and unhelpful...See more

ExArcana is a very unique setting. Brings something between Victorian and Pulp into the modern world with a sprinkling of magic. Utilizes the Chronos system, which has proven to be very easy to learn and adaptable.

I love the fact that companies are starting to give you the world and rule PDF for free so that you can check out the game before you invest. I used to flip through books at the local comic shop before I bought them, now I can do the same online before I buy my hard copies. Loved this book (looked really cool) and bought the card deck to play.

So Ex-Arcana is free but the card deck costs $20 for the PDF? That's rather steep pricing for a card deck - most are $5-10 for the *PRINT* deck (and often a few bucks for the PDF). I certainly won't be buying into their system.

Does it help instead to think of it as getting a book and a deck of cards for $20? Cuz… that's kind of what you're getting.

Dude... a company is giving you their entire game world for free to check out if you like it first. First off, that is pretty cool. Then if you see what you like you buy the card PDFs for $15 you can print them out indefinitely and use them. If you buy the hard copy of the cards cards in print, its like $20 for an 80 card deck. You may be the cheapest person in the world.

I just saw that your comment was without even downloading the free book. If you had downloaded the free book, and looked at it, it would have you listed as a purchaser. So you log onto products to give your opinion without even looking at the product? Wow. I am just going to assume that you are troll who is a super fan of another game line or works for another game company.

So is this a LARP? Or a tabletop system? I like the sound of it, but can't find alot of what it is or what is about on the web or your website.

Chronos is their LARP system (also suitable for tabletop, or "narrative" in their terms). The Ex-Arcana book is, I believe, one of the settings ("skeins") for Chronos.

I haven't seen much updates via their site and such, but having flipped through the two Chronos books (Core and Game Organizer), that seems to be the gist of it.

I've seen Chronos used primarily as a LARP system, but there is nothing stopping anyone from making this a Tabletop game. Admittedly, a narrative heavy game that turns into a card game when mechanics are pulled.

I played it as a LARP, but, they went into narrative table top during the game when we went off site. So I would say primarily LARP, but, if you aren't looking mechanic crunchy you could use it for table top too.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
