Ghost Ops - A Modern Day Covert Ops RPG

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

Welcome to the world of Covert Missions, Black Operations and Kill Orders.

You are a member of an elite team of special operatives, enlisted from the world’s best special forces units, to work for a new private military force, that does not recognise borders and is not funded by just one government, but all of them.

Your missions will take you to the streets of the USA and Western and Eastern Europe, the mountains of South America, the Jungles of Africa and the deserts of the Middle East. You will tackle drug cartels, organised crime, private militia, corrupt governments and terrorist cells.

The game is based on the modern world, but we include help on setting missions in the past like World War 2, Vietnam or even trying your team with the Iranian Embassy siege of the 80’s, or you can set the game in the future after an apocalypse, or invasion of the country you live in. The possibilities are endless.

Inside you will find rules for:

Creating Operatives from 13 different countries and over 20 different SpecOps units.
K9 Companions
Buying and upgrading Safehouses.
Bullet Time
Rules for running Hearts and Minds missions
And Much More...

So, gather your Squad and grab that kill order, the world is a bad place and you have work to do.

The Ghost Ops RPG uses Fudge Dice at its core, but this is neither a Fudge or Fate Core game, but does use some elements from both and adds a whole new heap of stuff to make this a fun, action-packed game of Covert Ops.

I really hope your Louie can get all the help he needs. I had a cat, and I know how it feels to be in that situation.

Is there a reason why the XSAPI is lighter and more protective than the ESAPI? Is this XSAPI meant to be different from the extra heavy, spine bending XSAPI of the real world?

Was there ever thoughts about those extra light plates that provide half decent protection, like AL 2?

Is there a reason why the HK416 is so cheap? I understand the prices dropped with the bulk orders, but did they really drop below the price of an M4 by that much?

I notice that Carbines aren't really different from Assault Rifles, likely due to a lack of a mechanical place to put such weapons.

-

Most of my thoughts so far aren't exactly complaints, just confusions.

I saw .303 was a caliber in the game and I thought "Well, I think the Lee Enfield is very common in Afghanistan." But no, the Remington 700 in game uses the .303... Odd.

I think its super cool that 16 and 20 gauge are options for shotguns.

I've purchased the softcover book of the original. I like it so far. Any intention of selling the hard copy version of this game?

I bought it in bundle with other books. For now I am reading the corebook and it's really interesting and great material for RolePlay. Still I don't understand few things:

1.) Bullet time is clean throw without any skills and advantages? Corebook says it is, but in the comment section operator can add weapon skill to the throw.
2.) Weapon benefits: How to use it, are they always on, if not operators could buy them as simple upgrade? Does other weapons except Pistols and SMG can get more upgrades than one?
3.) Is there a forum or discord server just for Ghost ops, questions and suggestions?

Bullet time involves having a DN based on what the operator is trying to achieve and then lowering that DN using Focus and other benefits to make it more manageable so yes you would roll the dice and add weapon skill.
If a weapon benefit is attached then it is always on
Yes we have a Discord server https://discord.gg/yDJsy5Y and an FB group

For the savage world's version you will need the Savage Worlds rules, but for this version, you only need this book all rules and everything are inside.

Is this game playable solo, or perhaps with only two people?

Yeah I suppose you could just have two operators, but we are currently running a Kickstarter for a Solo version so maybe check that out.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate you on a system that blends military realism with an accessible set of rules.

One thing I would ask is a clarification regarding bullet time. The rules suggest that you have to spend points from your focus pool (or at the very least have points in it) to activate bullet time but there does not seem to be an indication of how much is needed to be spent (a point per additional action perhaps?) I hope you can shed some light

Bullet time is based on the Handler determining how high the DN will be to accomplish the task, so, for example, let's say the Operator wishes to dive through a window, land in a forward roll and come up shooting with headshots at the 3 Tangos in the room. The Handler will look at the dive through the window as a DN of 3, but adding the forward roll makes it a 4, Headshots are call shots and a Headshot is normally a 4 difficulty so this increases the DN to 8 for the headshot and a further 3 for the 3 call shots. creating a difficulty of 11. The operator has a stored advantage which reduces the DN to 10, they then use their last two boosts which further reduces this to a DN of 8, the operator has 6 Focus points in their pool, which they decide to use 4 of to add to their weaponry of 4, so the DN is 8 and the operator has a skill of 8 (weaponry 4 + Focus 4) as long as they roll more +'s then -'s on the dice they succeed. A lot of this is done in the background with a narrative of what happens.

Very interested in this but I do have one question :- is the game more of a theatre of the mind or a battle map type game ?

Ok so it can be both, maps do play a part as they do in most RPGs, but you do not have to play with mini's, but there are skirmish rules included if you do want to. If you pick up one of PWYW Expanded Rules PDFs it allows you to play agents, like FBI, CSI etc which is also more theatre of the mind.

Quick ammo type question: Is there a mechanical benefit to hollow points I'm missing? Because it a glance, it seems most calibres of hollowpoint ammo share damage numbers with the standard (hollowpoint) and FMJ (hollowpoint +) rounds. I presume they do more damage to lightly armored targets or something of the sort, but I don't see anything in the core book at a glance.

For now, in the absence of an official reply, my house rule is that hollowpoints do more damage but have a lower PL. Will keep checking in for an official take.

Hi, Yeah they will do more damage to lightly armoured targets, I'm sure this is mentioned somewhere, I will check and if not I will add it to Expanded 3. Thanks for your question.

On a deeper look, it seems it works this way for rifle rounds, but not handgun rounds. It could be errata, perhaps.

Quick question regarding LMGs and the ammo rules: What's the point of a belt fed LMG or anything with a larger capacity for that matter? Ammo isn't tracked by bullet, so why would anyone bother using an LMG as the rules are written? Am I missing a rule somewhere in the book?

There is an ammo tracker on the character sheet and the LMG is affected by those rules, Rates of fire on pg112. Its also worth checking out the Expanded books as we are adding new optional rules via those all the time, maybe you could come up with something and let me know and I will include them :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
