The Secrets of Cats • A World of Adventure for Fate Core

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $4.00

SableCats are magical; cats understand sacrifice and the power of names. A decapitated mouse left on the doorstep or pillow is a powerful ward, and a spell wailed by the cat chorus confers even greater protection. When evil is on the rise and the safety of the neighbourhood is at stake the Parliament of Cats is there to stand firm against the darkness.

Take Silver Ford, for example, a sleepy tourist town near a played-out old silver mine. When kids messing around in the mine accidentally rouse an ancient evil on All Hallows’ Eve, the secret and magical cats of the neighbourhood are the only thing protecting their special people from the things that go bump in the night.

This 50 page Fate Core adventure provides everything you need to play from character generation to plot and setting ideas, including a new feline magic system based on true names and sacrifices made to protect your human Burdens.

The Secrets of Cats. Sharpen your claws and prepare to defend your territory!

The Fate Adventures & Worlds line provides compact, rich, affordable, gorgeous settings with a ready-to-go adventure for GMs in a pinch. Buy one this afternoon, be ready to run this evening.

Might work nicely as an advanced version of the Warriors game.

I agree with Fred that the sweet spot for Fate is 3 to 5 players, but you can run it with more. My regular game is about 7 players so I'm used to running for big groups. Apart from Fred's advice on leveling the opposition, my advice for coping with more players is to split the group more at dramatic moments to do parallel action... That keeps the action economy more under control.

Rather than having players being idle though, I encourage you to have them play NPCs in the other scene. In my experience players love the challenge of running villains against their allies.

Hey, what's an ideal player count for this, I have 6 people that are interested in playing (not including myself) which I think is a bit much but would rather people not miss out on playing if it meant that it's just a bit more work for me.

tldr; is it possible to make this work with 6 players?

I've run tables for 6 players in Fate before, in general it works but I do find 3-4 players is more of a sweet spot. You can toughen up (increasing skill ratings 1 or 2 points, maybe some extra stress boxes) any opposition you're interested in lasting longer since you've got six, and/or increasing the quantity of opposing NPCs when it comes to it.

I went to your webpage in search of this in print. Is this now out of print? Looks like there's only a PDF download left. Love cats, excited to see this book.

Any chance of having a print on demand option added for this book? The supplements have an option for a Softcover, Premium Color Book.

Can you use Fate Accelerated with this?

While it does use a version of Core's default example skill list, I'm of the opinion that you can use Fate Accelerated with anything. (If you need it, we have a Core<->Accelerated conversion guide here on this site.)

I have run this many times and ALWAYS use Fate Accelerated. I find it's much easier for newcomers to the hobby to imagine cats having Approaches than to picture them learning Skills.

Marvelous setting, well-thought out and brilliant in the way it fits cat mannerisms with an urban-fantasy twist (sacrificing small rodents to cast spells, not responding to the human-given name because it isn't the cat's real one). Excited for my first adventure to be set in modern day Rome within the real-world cat colony of the Colosseum.
Very inspirational, heavily suggested

I'm now funding the production and editing of a 10,000 word add-on volume to this book via Kickstarter over at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1229316235/the-secrets-of-cats-animals-and-threats/

This is going to provide you with a range of interesting sapient animals and terrifying threats to use in your games.

It's already funded, now I'm working on racking up the stretch goals so I can buy some wonderful art from the equally wonderful Crystal Frasier. Check it out if you have a moment, and help me to expand the world of Cats!

I have never played any of these games before. What do I need to know or have? Is The Secret Of Cats playable by one player? Is it a computer game? How long does it take?

This is a roleplaying game that's designed to be played by a group of friends sitting around a table (or a virtual table, if they're playing online). You can't play it single player normally, but there are tools around that are designed to replicate the role of the Game Master, generating random events to allow solo play. A session can take whatever amount of time you like, but most roleplaying game sessions are at least 2-3 hours in length.

To play the game you need this book, Fate Core (which is available for free from this site or as an online resource at fate-srd.com/), and four Fate dice. Fate dice are six-sided dice that produce a result of -, blank, or +. You can replicate them with normal six-sided dice (where 1-2 = -, 3-4 = blank, and 5-6 = +).

I would love to get this and the Core book for my boyfriend, but we have found pdf gaming to be too cumbersome. PLEASE produce this in print-on-demand format.

Fate Core System, first and foremost. (Fate Accelerated is very lightly used in terms of how spirits are represented, but not a necessity). Both are free/PWYW here on this site.

We have several amendments planned for Secrets of Cats, including a page of inspirations & other media that starts with John Wick's Cat. We'd left out mention originally due to word-count constraints, but it was a silly oversight on our part and we're working on correcting it.

Here's the text of that section. Once we get a new art piece or two (probably a month-or-so from now), we'll be releasing an update to the PDF that includes this as well as a bunch of other fun goodies.

==================

Our ancient forebears worshipped cats and, if the Internet is anything to go by, many of us still do. I drew from a long and storied tradition of cats as heroes when writing The Secrets of Cats, and the following is a short list of works that inspired me or which draw from the same tradition.

Cat by John Wick
”A Little Game About Little Heroes” that features housecats protecting their owners from monsters they can’t see. With a very straightforward system...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
